EUSO 2013 Luxembourg

The biggest event for young students with a special interest in science in the European Union is the European Union Science Olympiad. It is a scientific competition for EU secondary school science students who are 16 years of age.

Since 2003, the EUSO has been held every year; the number of countries taking part has increased ever since. Students from 22 countries participated in EUSO 2012 in Vilnius.

Luxembourg was the host of the 11th EUSO. 26 countries did come to our country from the 17th to the 24th of March 2013. 132 students and 85 mentors and observers did have a memorable week, a great competition and left with good impressions of our small country. To get an impression of EUSO 2013, have a look at our facebook-page: http://www.facebook.com/Euso2013

The official documentation about EUSO 2013 resumes the event in a perfect way. Have a look at the trailer of 4 minutes or the full documentation of 37 minutes.

The participating students had to solve problems during two practical tests de jeux de multiplication, these tests were organised in the laboratories of the University of Luxembourg. The problems (Test 1 was about silica and Test 2 about renewable energy) were created by the scientific committee of EUSO 2013.

All participants did stay at the Alvisse Parc Hotel for the week of EUSO 2013 (www.parc-hotel.lu). Apart from the scientific competiton, a varied cultural and social programme was offered to the participants.

About EUSO

The European Union Science Olympiad (EUSO) is a team competition for EU secondary school science students who are 16 years of age or younger on the December 31st prior to the competition. Students born on or after 1st January 1996 are therefore eligible to take part in EUSO 2013. EUSO was founded in 2002 by Mr. Michael Cotter. He is the President of EUSO, the Director of the Irish Science Olympiad and the treasurer of the International Board of the International Junior Science Olympiad. The first EUSO was held in Dublin, Ireland, in 2003. Since then the competition has been held every year in one of the participating countries: 2004 in the Netherlands, 2005 in Ireland, 2006 in Belgium, 2007 in Germany, 2008 in Cyprus, 2009 in Spain, 2010 in Sweden, 2011 in the Czech Rebuplic and 2012 in Lithuania.

The main objective of the EUSO is to challenge and stimulate gifted science students by helping them to develop their talents and by promoting their careers as scientists. Not only does EUSO provide an occasion for top science students from the European Unionto meet, but it also fosters a positive and high profile image of science and scientists among the wider community.

The students have the opportunity to enjoy a stimulating and varied cultural and social programme during their stay. Nevertheless, the competition is the main event of the Olympiad. The competition consists of two sessions during which the students work in teams of three on a specific subject. The tasks are designed so as to test their skills in tackling science problems and dealing with scientific experiments. A scientific jury, formed by the host country, develops the tasks. The student teams receive all tasks in their native language; the mentors being responsible for the translations.
